There’s a reason ethics is at the heart of our profession: trust is everything. And once we’ve earned it, we have a responsibility to protect it.
September is Ethics Month, making it the perfect time to pause and refresh our understanding of what it means to practice public relations ethically. PRSA offers programming and resources to help us revisit the Code of Ethics, explore real-world ethical challenges, and become familiar with the latest guidance available to communicators.
For Minnesota PRSA, this month carries an especially personal meaning. We’re celebrating the ethical legacy of Margaret Ann Hennen, APR, Fellow PRSA, whose career was deeply rooted in integrity and professional standards. Margaret Ann was a passionate advocate for ethics and served on PRSA’s Board of Ethics and Professional Standards (BEPS), a vital group that develops ethical guidance and resources for our profession.
Margaret Ann understood that ethics isn’t something we pull off the shelf when a difficult situation arises. It’s something we practice every day — in the decisions we make, the counsel we provide and the way we treat the people we serve.
So my September ask is simple: make ethics part of your professional practice. Take advantage of the resources available, revisit the Code, and have an ethics conversation with your team.
It’s one of the most important ways we can honor Margaret Ann’s legacy — and strengthen the profession she loved.
